Introduction

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of primary liver cancer, is one of the leading causes of cancer death globally. The highest incidence of HCC is in East and South-East Asia and Northern and Western Africa.1 However, the incidence of liver cancer, including HCC, has risen in areas with historically low rates, for instance, Western Europe, Northern America and parts of Oceania. Infection with hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus, as well as metabolic disorders, are etiologically responsible for HCC.2 The high rate of recurrence and heterogeneity render HCC intractable.3 Therefore, the mechanism underlying liver carcinogenesis remain elusive.
